The following Statement was released by the Board of Directors of the Rainbow Sash Movement.

CATHOLICS ARE NOT THE ENEMY, BIGOTRY IS

(04-11-09)-- The Rainbow Sash Movement is opposed to any who would use their position in the Gay Rights Movement to attack another s religion. While we are pleased that president Obama has appointed Harry Knox, director of the religion and faith program at Human Rights Campaign to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships it is our hope that Mr. Knox will appreciate the diversity of the Catholic family and tone down what appears to be anti Catholic rhetoric.

Clearly there are statements from the Holy Father that are not scientifically sound. Such statements should be challenged in respectful discourse. However, using a broad paintbrush to paint all Catholics as foot soldiers of oppression in respect to the GLBT Catholic Community is just as irresponsible as the Pope saying condoms don’t work.

There is tension developing between the Catholic Conservatives and the Obama Administration; however, this should not be used as justification to attack the Catholic Faith. We had hoped that President Obama would have selected Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Catholic to this position thus bringing balance and adequate representation.

We are calling for a challenging respect for the Catholic Faith. Understanding, that homophobia like racism and sexism is not confined to the Catholic arena. When any Church promotes homophobia over reason, such statements should be robustly challenged. Such statements should not be confused with an individuals faith. Catholics voted for president Obama by a large margin refuting any attempt to define us as anyone's foot soldiers.

We are calling on reasonable people not be silent when the Catholic Faith is attacked in the name of Human Rights.
