A Hidden Epidemic of Pain in HIV Patients

Irvine, CA, Sept. 24, 2009-- "Sitting pain forced me to quit so many activities. I became a virtual shut in." This person is not alone. Initial results of a national survey is finding that 91% of HIV patients with lipoatrophy report pain when sitting.

"Loss of body fat (lipoatrophy) is a common occurrence in long term HIV patients and can lead to significant sitting pain and discomfort. Joe Bollert, PhD, Cofounder of LipoWear reported "The initial results of a new survey included 76 patients surveyed at 13 HIV medical practices and AIDS Service Organizations. Because the percentage suffering from sitting pain was so high, we decided to announce these early results."

Lipowear illustration To date the survey has included 79% male and 21% female patients. Only 9% of the patients with HIV and lipoatrophy reported no sitting pain.

The overall incidence of this sitting pain problem is generally under reported to physicians as patients focus on critical viral load, T cell count and other side effect issues during office visits. This preliminary data should be brought to the treating physician's attention as sitting pain often results in the withdrawal from activities which contribute to the quality of life.

Earlier clinical trial data from LipoWear found that SitRelief Shorts provided significant sitting pain relief and a dramatic improvement in an HIV Quality of Life Survey including Physical, Social and Cognitive Function. Bollert reported "Patients reported being able to participate longer and concentrate better in a wide variety of activities as a result of sitting pain relief. By relieving the suffering, the Quality of Life improved significantly."

SitRelief Shorts are available online at www.lipowear.com.

SitRelief Shorts are a clinically tested padded undergarment designed to provide sitting pain relief to patients who have lost the natural fat cushion in the buttocks which often results in significant sitting pain. This includes people with cancer, HIV/AIDS as well as seniors.
